Hairspray is a film adaptation of the 2002 broadway musical set in 1962 Baltimore, a town in America. It is about segregation in America between black and white people and how they were not allowed to be seen together on tv or anywhere else. A girl called Tracy tries to get into a tv show called the Corny Collins show as a dancer, at first she is turned away my he station manager as she is not the size or shape of the other dancers, however she finally gets in and is loved by the audience members. The songs in hairspray are mostly upbeat and fast like "the nicest kids in town" and "you cant stop the beat". However there are some like "i can hear the bells" and "i know where ive been" that are slower and more relaxed. The costumes used in this musical are big dresses for the girls that are usually bright colours with frills and flowers and other patterns, the me wear suits and ties. All of the girls have hairstyles that are unnaturally big with curls and lots of hairspray. The dancing in hairspray is very over the top, there are lots of kicks and flicks. The girls use their dresses to make the dancing look better especially when they are turning their dresses flare out.
