Thursday 10th December 2015 - Durington High School Workshop

Today we visited Durrington High School  to do a workshop with them, this gave us an opportunity to test the material that we have currently have in front of an audience, this has allowed us to see how an audience would react the performance. We showed the prologue, Officer Krupuke, I feel Pretty, Tonight and the Rumble, this is because it is is a variety of different numbers that introduce the characters and the relationships between those, for example the Sharks and the Jets, Tony and Maria. Because we had to perform in a different space compared to the Sealight, we had to adapt spacing and change the way we exit and enter, this is because we didn't have different levels to use, this meant that we had to create them more with some of us kneeling and others standing etc. I think that our performance went well, this is because we communicated well with each other and we had also choreographed smooth transitions between numbers. This was important like in any other performance that when moving on and off stage not to distract the audience from what is being performed.

After our performance we worked with the children with stage combat, we explained the rules of this to them so that no one got hurt whilst doing this, they got into pairs and then choreographed their own stage fight, once they had done this they performed it. After we had done this we got some feedback from the audience, they enjoyed the performance and had some questions about when we were performing the final version of this, this showed that they were interested in coming to see it. Overall i thought this workshop went well, the audience responded well to what we showed and taught them, therefore we were able to successfully promote our show as well as trial our material.

Monday 13th December 2015 - The Castle Company

Monday 13th December 2015 - Budget Forms

This budget form shows the different income sources I am using for my theatre company. I estimated over three shows we will sell 110 full adult prices and 45 concession tickets, this will give a total revenue of £2985.00, as well as this I estimated around 45 programmes sold per night which will give a total revenue of £135.00. Programme printing will be a total of £50, therefore the net profit for the programmes will be £85.00. The contribution of £1000 is from my personal savings, this covers the payments for the technical rehearsals and final performances. The other income of £2000 is from a bank loan and will be paid back over 2 years at an interest rate of 14%, this is going towards marketing/publicity and set, props and lighting. This makes my total income £6120.00, this includes tickets, personal savings, programme sales and a bank loan.
This budget form shows the total costs for my theatre production tour including set, props and lighting, costumes and make-up etc. This also includes a 10% contingency which is in case anything goes wrong, it is 10% of the budget and acts as a safety buffer. Performance rights cost £235 for this production of Annie the Musical, I could have decided to tour a devised piece where I wouldn't have had to pay performance rights, however I decided to choose a well known musical. This has allowed me to spend less on marketing and publicity as people are already aware of the show and many people are already a fan of it. A devised play would require more marketing as people do not already know about it and therefore I would have to spend more money on advertising it enough to sell a substantial amount of tickets. The venues have come to a total cost of £1000 this included performances and technical rehearsals. All of these elements have come to a total of £2135.00, this taken away from the total revenue allows The Castle Company to make a profit of £3622.50 when touring Annie The Musical.

Monday 17th December 2015 - Organisation Structures

Friday 17th December 2015 - Income Sources

Personal Savings - This is where you use money that you have personally saved up money to use for a business venture. This is usually a lump sum of money that can you used to start up something. This can rarely be used by itself and therefore will require a different source of income to support it taking a business venture.

Bank Loan - This is usually a long term loan from the bank and is paid back over a long period of time such as 3 years and may have an interest rate. The amount that is borrowed will determine the interest rate that is applied. The sum of money will be paid into your bank account and will be available to use.

Overdraft - This is a short time source of finance, this Is an agreement with the bank that you can take out more money than you actually have in your account. This is usually a short term source as overdrafts have a higher interest rate compared to an ordinary bank loan.

Reinvesting Profit - Reinvesting profit is where you use the profit from a previous business venture and invest it into a current business venture.

Shareholders - Shareholders buy a share of a business or company in return for a percentage of the profits. For example if someone brought 30% of a business, they would receive 30% of the profits, they will also have to pay 30% of the total costs, to receive this profit.

Programme Advertisement - This is where you contact a business/company and negotiate with them about exchanging advertising space in the programme for a sum of money. This money can help towards the costs of putting together a show, as well as this it gives businesses a chance to advertise to a wider audience and target market.

Ticket and Programme Sales - This is the total revenue of all tickets and programmes sold, once taken away the costs of the venue etc, hopefully there is money let over - this is profit. Any profit that is made on this is a source of finance for the show and helps towards the costs of putting it on.

Monday 14th December 2015 - Theatre Tour Presentation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XWIaT72lp4

When watching my presentation back I noticed that although I had a lot of relevant information in my power point, I did not elaborate this enough when speaking, personally I think that this I because I did not prepare a script to follow. I did this because I didn't want to be constantly looking down at a piece of paper, however consequently I frequently turned around to look round at the screen at the information. To make my presentation better I could have spoken more clearly therefore I would have been able to  deliver the information better, as well as this if Id have been more confident with what I was saying I would have been able to make my overall presentation better.
I thought that my actual information and research was detailed and well developed, I had reached different venues and the prices of these, as well as prices of set, lighting and staging. As well as this I had also researched performance rights and budgeting in depth.
However next time I do a public speaking presentation I am going to prepare a script so that I am more confident in what I am saying. As well as this I am going to talk calmer and more clearly so that I can deliver my information better to the audience.

They were first set up in 1930 by a group of west end performers, it focuses on fair payments and fees for artists, health and safety and members pension and insurance schemes. In 1967 they incorporated the variety artistes federation. They are the only trade union to represent all different types of artists, they are not politically affiliated and therefore they do not make payments to any political party, however they are affiliated to the Trade Union Congress.

Arts Council
http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/  (19/10/15)

Arts Council Britain was set up in the 1940s, however in 1994 it was divided to make arts council England, Scottish arts council and arts council Wales. Arts council England develops and invests in artistic and cultural experiences that may influence the public's lives. They support activities including the arts, museums, theatre, digital arts, dance, music and literature. They invest money from the government and national lottery, between 2015 and 2018 they plan to invest £1.1 billion of public money and £700 million from the national lottery to help develop these experiences for as many people as possible.
You can apply for funding through the official website, one example of this is to apply for a Ambition for excellence fund. This is a rolling programme that finishes in 2017, the total fund is £35.2 million and the maximum grant is between £100,000 and £750.000. The priority areas are developing talent and engaging audiences on a national scale.  The fund aims to realise the significant growth of international arts especially outside of London. It aims to develop talent and leadership in strong cultural places and create the highest quality of new work. It supported the creation of work for international event for example the 2012 London Olympic opening and closing ceremonies. Applicants can apply for a grant and applications will be received in two stages - (an expression of interest followed by an invitation to apply). Organisations that are eligible to submit an expression of interest are those who are national portfolio organisations, museums that wish to hold arts projects and those that are primarily focused on creating, producing and presenting the arts in England.

The Stage
https://www.thestage.co.uk/ (17/12/15)

The Stage Media Company Limited serves to provide news for the UK performing arts and entertainment industry, it was first set up in 1880 and is owned by the family of one of the founders. The articles are published online and printed every Thursday. The stage provides information from across all aspects of the performing arts industry from advice to help performers, directors and casting agents to reviews on shows on and off the West End. There are also jobs listed on The Stage from auditions for different types of theatre, to back stage and behind the scenes jobs, there is also front of house and marketing and finance jobs. As well as this there is also information about training institutions, this is helpful for younger performers who are interesting in studying performing arts at a higher education level.

Dance UK
http://www.nationaldrama.org.uk/ (17/12/15)

This organisation was founded in 1982 by a group of dance professionals, the central idea is to face big issues in the dance sector of the performing arts industry. It aims to promote longer, more sustainable dance careers and improves the conditions as to which dance is created and performed. Dance UK promotes the importance of dance and the needs of dancers in more cultural industries. This organisation has over 1000 individual members, these members consist of dancers, teachers, students and choreographers as well as dance medics. As well as this it also has over 230 corporate members that include some of the countries leading dance companies, vocational colleges and theatres. These include the Royl Ballet Company and Sadlers Wells. Dance UK has developed a healthier dance programme that promotes a dancers health and well-being.

How do all of these organisations work together?

It is important for all of these organisations to work together for example all of the performers on Spotlight will need Equity if they work professionally. This is because Equity is a trade union and therefore protects its members, if a performer is a member they will be protected from issues they may face within the industry. This is also a similar idea for Dance UK as this organisation protects its members from problems and issues that they may face when working. Another example of this would be all of the arts organisations that are helped and funded by the  Arts Council may be featured on The Stage, this is because this the centre of all news and information in the performing arts industry.
