Blocking Act 1 Of Our Country's Good

Today we worked on scene six, this is where the higher authorities discuss the merits of theatre and are deciding whether or not to put on a play. We gathered around in a circle the majority sitting down with a few standing up, the lower ranked people were standing, this is to show that they are less important and therefore don't have a right to sit down as much of the others during a meeting like this. I am Arthur Phillip and even though we are sitting in a circle I am the head of it, this is to show that even though we are in a discussion the final word comes down to my characters decision. Because of this all of the others are putting forward their opinions on whether the play should go ahead or not, to emphasis this the majority of the ideas are said to me.

When Collins says "Neither are our women convicts" everyone In the scene laughs and sniggers, this is because the women convicts are being compared to actresses who have lose morals. This is suggesting that they do not have much respect for themselves and some of the officers take advantage of them because of this. However Arthur Phillip laughs less than some of the others, this is because be believes that the convicts can be reformed. I know this because he says that "They can be educated" and "Man can be redeemed" this tells us that he has more respect for the convicts than the others and believes that if they are educated that when they are put back into society they will be less likely to commit another crime.

In this scene we raise a toast to England, when doing this raise our glasses and no one speaks for a little bit - there is a moment of silence. This is because our characters are taking time to remember England, this is kind of a moment of reflection as they are realising that they are so far away from being able to return and they still think of it as an amazing place. Later in the scene when Ross is having a rant because he doesn't think it Is a good idea to put on a play, he threatens to report back to "the Admiralty" I have to say "You're out of turn Robbie". I have to raise my voice when I say this because it is almost like a reminder that he has gone a step too far and that I have authority over him, so therefore he doesn't have a right to speak to my character like that.
