The New Girl In Town Evaluation
The New Girl In Town
Intonation - As this was a group performance we incorporated harmonies into the song, this was to make the performance more interesting to the audience and also to add more texture and depth to the song. As we had worked on this during rehearsals in our final performance our harmonies worked well together especially in the ending and at the end of a phrase, for example on the word "town". I sung the higher part in the ending with Emily, this is because we did a three part harmony and as the higher note was in our head voice it sounded better to have two people singing this part as it wasn't as powerful as the lower parts. We also sung a harmony in the second half of the song In the faster part, i also sung the higher part and although I sung the correct pitch I didn't project this well enough. In other parts the song was monophonic, this is where everyone in the ensemble is singing the same melody and pitch as each other. We decided to do this because it creates more of an impact and allows the volume of the singing to be louder. I thought that my intonation in this song was better than in some of the first rehearsals, as in these i found that sometimes i was singing flat notes, however in this performance i sang the correct notes to stay in pitch with the backing track and the other singers in my group.
Timing - In previous rehearsals we had, had some trouble with the timing of the last line, this is because there is a gap between "in" and "town". To make sure that we got the right timing for this we counted how many beats there were in-between in the music, this was 7 beats, in the performance we each counted then in our heads and therefore we were all in time with each other and the music. Our timing was also good in the first line of the song, this meant that the beginning of the performance was strong and created an impact to the audience as we were in perfect time with each other.
Breath Control - In this song I thought that I my breath control was good, I was able to sing the song whilst breathing in the appropriate places, this made the performance look good as it wasn't broken up by taking breaths in the middle of notes or phrases. However I am going to continue to work on this by using techniques that I have been doing for the last few weeks. The technique is breathing in for one, holding it in for one and then breathing out for one, you continue doing this up to eight, this helps gain control over the amount of breath that is used when singing.
Projection - For the majority of this performance I thought that my projection was okay, this is because I didn't think that my voice was loud enough for the audience to hear clearly, especially in the parts where I had to sing in my head voice. I found it hard to project the fats part, this is because I am not used to singing high and fast, I am going to work on this so that the next song that I sing that has a similar melody will be better. I also thought that my projection in the ending was poor, this was especially when singing "she was the new girl". I found this hard because we had to put our hand in front of our faces and turn our heads to sing out, it was difficult to sing like this as I am used to just standing forward singing. However I am glad that we decided to do this as it gave me a challenge to do something that would stretch my performing skills to something that I had never done before.
Diction - I thought that my diction could have been better than it was in this performance, this is because the letter "T" is said many times throughout the song and I don't think that my pronunciation of this was good. To improve on this I am going to sing different tongue twisters such as "Betty botty...", this helps to sing this clearly. I also thought that my overall diction in the faster section in the second half of the song was poor, I am going to work on this so that in my next performance my pronunciation is better to allow the audience to hear each word clearly.
Choreography - We decided to put some simple choreography in this performance because it is an upbeat song and we thought that It would look at little bit boring to the audience if we just stood there singing. During most of this performance I thought that I did the choreography well and also used my interpretive skills to make it look better and more interesting. However there were a few moments when I went to do the wrong movement and then realised what I was supposed to be doing, this made it look as if I didn't know what I was doing throughout some of the performance.
Overall Characterisation - As we used set choreography in this performance, it helped with our overall characterisation, this is because it allowed us to relate to the time period in which the song was set in (1960s). However I think I could have used more facial expressions to develop my characterisation in this song, this would have made it look more interesting to the audience. This song should have been performed in an over-the-top and cheesy way because this is typical of 1960s dancing and singing, if I had a chance to perform this again I would have been more over-the-top than I was in this performance to make it look better than it did.
Targets For Next Performance -
- Projecting my head voice - This is important so that all parts of the voice are sung loud enough so that everyone in the audience can hear it clearly. I am going to develop this by visualising singing along a rope during rehearsals to see how far my voice travels along the rope.
- Practise singing whilst dancing - This is important, especially in musical theatre because many songs like "The new girl in town" require some sort of movement to accompany the sing. I am going to develop this by just continue to practise singing whilst dancing to gradually improve stamina.
