Have you explored the themes of the texts and the character development before your audition?
For west side story I looked into the character of anita to perform my song "a boy like that" this is because I wanted to portey this as accurate as possible. I worked on a peurto riccan accent when singing this song, this is because the show is heavily based on the rivaly between the sharks and jets and anita is from the sharks. I think that I worked well on this in rehearsals and performed this well in my audition. She is also a very feisty character and therefore when performing to Taylor as if she was Maria I was quite strong in both my vocal and actions, which allowed me to relate to the character I was playing. On the other hand for my classical theatre I had not done as much research for my audition and therefore I was not able to portey my character as well as I had hoped. Although Beatrice is a strong character I think I could have done better if I had researched and rehearsed more.
